A+ Legal Research

A 60-minute Teleconference for Law Students, New Lawyers, and Their Supervising and Assigning Attorneys

Research is what I'm doing when I don't know what I'm doing. Wernher von Braun

Law is an art, not a science, and lawyers can't afford not to know what they're doing when they conduct legal research. This advanced legal research program is designed to help summer associates, third-year hires, and new lawyers start research right, stay on track, correct their course should they go adrift, avoid stopping blocks, and move well from one research assignment to the next. The renowned faculty also will share tips on their favorite tools for legal, business, and specialty research, including what's new on the web that may be difficult to find, but important to use for A+ Legal Research.

Moderated by former law librarian Catherine Sanders Reach, the Associate Director of the ABA's Legal Technology Resource Center, this one-hour Teleconference features a faculty with diverse perspectives and great skill in legal research techniques and tools:

Judith Gaskell, Law Librarian, United States Supreme Court. Only the 10th librarian of the Court and the third woman to have the position, Judy previously served for 20 years as the Director of DePaul's Law Library, worked at the University of Chicago Law Library, and has library and law degrees;

Arturo Torres, previously served as Associate Professor and Director of the Law Library and Computing Department at Gonzaga University School of Law is now the Associate Dean for Law Library and Computing and Professor of Law at Texas Tech University School of Law. Other assignments have included Associate Director of the Law Library and Assistant Professor of Legal Bibliography at the University of Louisville School of Law, Head of Reference at the University of Arizona School of Law, former staff attorney for Oregon Legal Services, and Ford Foundation Fellow. Dean Torres co-authored Latin American Legal Abbreviations: A Comprehensive Spanish/Portuguese Dictionary with English Translations and has written and published numerous articles on law librarianship and related fields;

Marc Kadish, Director of Pro Bono Activities and Litigation Training, Mayer, Brown, Rowe, & Maw LLP. Marc joined Mayer Brown in 1999, after practicing law and teaching in the legal clinic at ITT-Chicago Kent College of Law for twenty years. Marc has tried over 50 jury trials and a larger number of bench trials in Federal or State courts, mostly in the Chicago area; and

Charlene Hicks, Research Attorney, National Legal Research Group. Charlene joined NLRG in 1994, after obtaining her JD from Marshall Wythe School of Law, College of William and Mary, where she graduated Order of the Coif and a member of the Law Review. At the National Legal Research Group, her work focuses on Contracts and Civil Procedure.
