Conflict of Interests: EU Data Protection Statutes and US Corporate Investigations

  • This article provides an introduction to European Union data protection principles and how those principles may come into play during U.S. government investigations, such as those conducted by the Department of Justice or the Securities Exchange Commission. By ignoring or flouting data protection rights, companies sometimes create new problems while trying to manage old ones. It therefore is essential, when investigating on foreign soil, to become familiar with the local data protection landscape.
