It's time to nominate
Whom do you think should be nominated for a leadership position in the Section?
The Nominating Committee needs your recommendations for leadership positions for the 2001-2002 association year. Nominees will be selected for:
• chair-elect (who automatically assumes the position of chair the following year)
• secretary (who automatically assumes the position of vice chair the following year)
• budget officer for a four-year term expiring in 2005
• one Section delegate to the ABA House of Delegates for a three-year term expiring in 2004
• five additional Council members for a four-year term expiring in 2005.
Historically, the preceding year's vice chair has been nominated to serve as chair-elect the following year.
The Business Law Section recognizes that members of the Section represent unique backgrounds and bring a variety of valuable skills and perspectives. This diversity is a strength for the Section. We believe that the leadership also should reflect a spirit of inclusiveness and diversity. In light of this, the Nominating Committee will take into account the following principles in making its selections. It will:
• select nominees who have been substantial and active contributors to the Section
• seek geographic diversity in the leadership of the Section
• strive for representation from a broad cross section of the areas of the law represented in the Section
• seek to draw leaders from a broad cross section of the various sectors of practice, including corporate law departments, government, academia and private law firms
• actively recruit nominees that reflect the different dimensions of diversity in the Section

Longevity & dedication
Some 25 years ago, I met with Section leaders in an effort to persuade them to form a new group that now is known as the Committee on Regulation of Futures and Derivative Instruments. I served as the first chair.
One of the tools I used to draw attention to our new outfit and to accelerate a rise in membership was to organize a winter meeting in a warm climate. While many of the Caribbean's best islands have hosted the committee, the venue for the last few years has been Key West, Fla.
In mid-winter, at the next Key West meeting, we hope to assemble every chair that the committee has had since its inception. Business Law Today readers might be interested in this tale of dedication and longevity, attributes found throughout the Section.
