Section sound bites

Section contributes to scholarship fund

At the Annual Meeting, ABA President William G. Paul announced the creation of the ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund, designed to enable young persons of color to attend law school. At the Section’s Council Meeting, Paul explained the importance of this program and encouraged the Section and its members to support it.

Within 24 hours after the presentation, the Section proudly presented a check to the scholarship fund for more than $110,000 that included more than $60,000 in individual contributions from Section members.

The Section is committed to increasing the participation of minorities in the profession. To learn more about the Section’s goals, check out the Section’s Diversity Plan at www.abanet.org/buslaw.

Aircraft Carrier comments submitted

The Committee on Federal Regulation of Securities submitted a comment letter in response to the SEC’s request for comments on the regulation of securities offerings. The Aircraft Carrier release focuses on the registration process used for the sales of securities under the securities Act of 1933.

In an extensive report, the committee recommends the following: the withdrawal of the "Aircraft Carrier;" a thorough economic study of the registration system, particularly the communications process; and re-proposal, as necessary, after completion of further study.

Public Service Award

Nominations are now being accepted for the Section’s National Public Service Award. This award recognizes significant pro bono legal service that demon- strates a commitment to providing services to the poor in a business context.
