The Section of Litigation recognized James L. Baillie, chair of our Sections Pro Bono Committee, with its John Minor Wisdom Public Service and Professionalism award at its Annual Meeting in Dallas in April. This award recognizes lawyers who have made significant contributions to the quality of justice in the legal profession and in their communities by extending legal assistance to the poor, the disenfranchised and other under-represented groups.
Baillie, of Minneapolis, began his pro bono work by representing indigent criminal defendants. He gradually switched his focus to bankruptcy representation. He was instrumental in persuading the Bankruptcy Section of the Minnesota State Bar Association to develop and fund a pro bono program that has become a nationwide model. He also has been actively involved with assisting other jurisdictions in developing their own bankruptcy programs. Baillie chaired the ABA Standing Committee on Lawyers Public Service Responsibility for three years.
