Section sound bites

Public Service award Nominations are now being accepted for the Section's National Public Service Award. This award recognizes significant pro bono legal services that demonstrate a commitment to providing services to the poor in a business context.

Because of the increasing difficulty in choosing only one nominee to win the award, as well as the inequity of comparing an individual lawyer's pro bono contributions to that of a firm or company, the Pro Bono Committee will again present two awards — one recognizing the pro bono contributions of an individual and one recgonizing those of a firm or company.

Nominations for these awards are due in the Section office by Feb. 12, 1999. For complete information and award criteria, call 312/988-6244 or e-mail businesslaw@abanet.org. The recipient will be announced at the Spring Meeting, April 16, 1999.

Spring Meeting Mark your calendar . . . plan to attend the Section's Spring Meeting in San Francisco, April 14-18, 1999. In mid-January you will receive detailed information on registration, 45 plus CLE programs, more than 200 committee and subcommittee meetings and a lot of great social activities.

Preliminary program and committee meeting schedules, as well as basic information on registration and social activities, are now available on the Section's Web site at www.abanet_.org/buslaw or by calling the Section's Fax on Demand at 312/988-5810.

This meeting promises to be a memorable event — the possibilities for enhancing your knowledge are limitless. First-timers register for only $225 — a saving of up to $320. Don't miss the chance to earn an entire year's worth of CLE in just four days!

Glass Cutter award Nominations are now open for the Seventh Annual Glass Cutter Award. It is presented annually by the Business Law Section's Women's Caucus to a woman in the Section who has made significant contributions to the Section and the profession.

Acknowledge the extraordinary woman you know by nominating her for the award! Call Sue Daly in the Section office at 312/988-6244 or e-mail suedaly@staff.abanet.org to request a nomination form. Nominations must be received before Feb. 12, 1999. The recipient will be announced at the Spring Meeting in San Francisco on April 16, 1999.

Student Writing Contest award The Section is again sponsoring the Mendes Hershman Student Writing contest. Deans of all ABA-accredited law schools are invited to nominate a paper on a business law topic for the Section's 1998-1999 writing contest. Papers -- whether or not they were published in a law review or legal journal -- must have been written during the 1997-1998 or current academic year. Entries must be received by Feb. 12, 1999. The first-prize winner will receive $2,500 and an all-expense-paid trip to the Section's Spring Meeting in San Francisco.
