ABA's Young Lawyers Division Spring Meeting Event
The Trial of the Century: Brown v. Board of Education

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, YLD's Minorities in the Profession Committee, along with other ABA entities, will present a re-enactment of components of the Topeka trial, complete with lead attorneys, judges and witnesses. The program begins at noon on Friday, April 30, with a tour of the National Civil Rights Museum at the site of the Lorraine Motel, where Martin Luther King, Jr. was shot in 1968. Through its collections, exhibits, research and educational programs, the Museum assists the public in understanding the lessons of the Civil Rights Movement and its impact and influence on the human rights movement worldwide. Lunch will be provided.

The Brown v. Board of Education re-enactment will take place at 1:30 p.m. at the Peabody Hotel. This re-enactment will feature Johnnie Cochran as a lead attorney with witnesses drawn from YLD members and local Memphis middle school students. Following the re-enactment, the participants will be part of a roundtable discussion of the immediate and future impact of the Brown decision.

In addition to an increased awareness and knowledge of the significance of the Brown v. Board of Education decision historically and currently, this program will provide those who attend with a tutorial on trial skills, including how to lay the proper foundation for introducing exhibits, examine expert witnesses, use demonstrative exhibits and determine what testimony is really hearsay.

This is a ticketed event, $15, pre-registration is required. Visit YLD's Spring Meeting website for more information.
