Chicago: Cook Co. Bar

The Cook County Bar Association, in cooperation with many other legal and community organizations, annually sponsors Law Day programs. This year we are proud to announce that Law Day will commemorate the 50th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education.

On May 3, 2004, we anticipate that over 300 high school students from the Chicago Metropolitan area will participate in Law Day activities. Chief Judge Timothy Evans will host the Law Day Breakfast Program at the Daley Center. The Law Day Luncheon will be held at the Harold Washington Winter Garden room, and the Honorable Judge Ann Clare Williams, United States Court of Appeals, will be the keynote speaker.

On May 1, 2004, new this year, we plan to hold a Law Day Program for college students at DePaul Center 53 E. Jackson, 11th floor. Larry Rogers Sr. will be the keynote speaker. The program will also include a panel discussion: Honorable Judge Ellis Reid, Illinois Appellate Court Judge; Tishaunda Jamison, Northwestern Law School student; Eugene Edwards, poverty law attorney; and Michelle Goodwin, DePaul Law School Professor. Representative from John Marshal Law School, DePaul Graduate School and the University of Illinois Graduate School will discuss the nuts and bolts on admissions to professional/graduate schools.

As you can see from the proposed programs, the Law Day theme of "Principles of Justice and Equality" will reach a broad cross-section of students.

Chicago: IL Humanities Council

Brown v. Board 50 Years Later: Conversations on Integration, Race, and the Courts

On May 17, 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that “separate educational facilities are inherently unequal,” a decision that overturned centuries of government-sanctioned racial discrimination. The Illinois Humanities Council’s “Brown v. Board 50 Years Later” program uses the 50th anniversary of this landmark decision to reflect on the continued relevance of the issues central to the case. From April 2004 through May 2005, the Illinois Humanities Council will host programs around the state—in Carbondale, Chicago, Decatur, Jacksonville, Macomb, and Springfield—to engage our communities in conversations about integration, racial equality, and the role of the courts in bringing about social change.

Chicago: Union Hill M.B. Church

The Union Hill M.B. Church, located at 600 S. Tripp in Chicago, Illinois under the leadership of the Pastor, Rev. August Minor, held a commemorative event to recognize the 50th Anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education on March 30, 2004. The Youth Ministry's Tutoring Program sponsored a very informative and spiritually uplifting evening that included praise dancers, songs of worship and a powerful presentation from noted author, John W. Fountain. He is a former journalist with the New York Times and spent his childhood in the church's neighborhood, in the area known as K-Town, which is part of the Lawndale community. Mr. Fountain stressed the importance of education and God for the success in his life. Several children, from elementary through high school ages, recited research, facts and background information on the 5 cases that formed the foundation of Thurgood Marshall and the NAACP's legal strategy to combat and defeat segregation in the public schools. The legacy and significance of the program was well received by this African-American congregation and it should be noted that the coordinator of the event is an attorney who was inspired by the dynamic teachings of President Archer at last year's [American Bar Association] Annual Meeting.
