Latinos in California: Their Role in the Legacy of Brown v. Board of Education
The Department of Law and Public Policy, UC Riverside Extension presents 50th Anniversary Brown v. Board of EducationLatinos in California: Their Role in the Legacy of Brown v. Board of Education.
Equality through Law: No milestone in this process is more important than the Supreme
Court’s 1954 ruling in Brown v. Board of Education. The Brown case was a culmination of a
long line of court cases brought by the NAACP Legal Defense Fund challenging laws that
allowed segregation in public schools. The Brown ruling sounded the death knell for
government-sanctioned segregation and helped launch the civil rights movement. This
presentation addresses how the first desegregation cases involved Mexican-American
students in California and the impact those early rulings had on the strategy of the NAACP.
Guest Speaker: Thomas Saenz, Attorney at Law, MALDEF
Thomas Saenz, Attorney at Law, is Vice-President of Litigation with
the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund.
