The American
Bar Association Midyear Meeting was held in San Diego, Calif., Feb. 13-20.
The National Association of Bar Executives, the National Conference
of Bar Presidents and the National Conference of Bar Foundations held meetings

Lawyers frequently consult with and
advise clients in other states; take depositions in other states; negotiate
matters out of town on behalf of clients; and, as a general counsel, may
travel to other states to handle the corporation’s work. Are these lawyers,
who are not licensed in the other states, committing unauthorized practice
of law?
“No issue is more important to the
administration of justice than the way we deal with the death penalty,”
remarks Michael Greco of Boston, chair of the American Bar Association
Section of Individual Rights and Responsibilities.
In recent years, attempts to promote
diversity have been eroded by court action and state mandates. The state
of affirmative action is in flux in many areas, leading bar leaders to
conclude that the need to promote diversity in the legal profession is
more important now than ever before.
In California, there are 68,000 laws
that cover fruit and agriculture, and 73 of them deal exclusively with
kiwi fruit. That’s right, kiwi fruit. Only six state laws cover homicide.
Todd Stevens remembers the morning
last year when he opened up the San Diego Union-Tribune over breakfast
and read the article. The article reported that the estate of a prominent
San Diego lawyer and businessman had left $100 million to a local community
foundation. Stevens, who is president of the San Diego County Bar Foundation,
lost his appetite.
