CHAIR'S MESSAGE

My thanks go out to everyone who had a hand in making the recent Fall Meeting of the Section in Washington, D.C. such a great success. Those who were unable to attend missed a series of exceptional programs and social events.

Our dinner honoring former Assistant Attorneys General (AAG's) of the Office of Legal Counsel ("OLC") of the United States Department of Justice exceeded all expectations. Twelve former AAG's were in attendance: Chief Justice Rehnquist, Justice Scalia, former Attorney General Katzenbach, former Circuit Judge Wilkey, Circuit Judge Luttig, and the Honorables Norbert Schlei, John Harmon, Theodore Olson, Charles Cooper, Douglas Kimec, Timothy Flanigan and Walter Dellinger. Our speakers for the evening, Chief Justice Rehnquist, a former Council member, and Justice Scalia, a former Section Chair, recounted their fond memories of their tenures at OLC and ties with our Section. Also attending were Justice Breyer, a former Council member who introduced our speakers, Attorney General Reno, and our own Beth Nolan, who is awaiting confirmation as the next AAG of OLC.

Our luncheon honoring the recipients of our Annual Awards for Scholarship and for Outstanding Government Service was also a special moment. And the last social event, a reception hosted by The Washington School Law at American University, helped to solidify our relationship with the new publisher of our Administrative Law Review.

In what has become a regular part of our Fall Meeting, Section members and practitioners attended our Annual Review of Judicial and Legislative Developments in Administrative Law and Regulatory Practice. We thank the Chairs of our Rulemaking, Judicial Review, Adjudication and Constitutional Law Committees for their outstanding efforts in making the annual event a great success. The program concluded with presentations by members of the senior staff of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee on the status of pending regulatory reform proposals. The afternoon program on Reinventing Campaign Finance, which was organized by the three Co-Chairs of our Election Law Committee, was also a success. It was both exciting and timely, and the faculty consisted of most of the acknowledged experts in the field.

Now, we look forward to the Midyear Meeting of the Section, which will be held in Nashville, Tennessee on January 30-February 1, 1998. Our Meeting Chairs, Ina Leonard, General Counsel of the University of Alabama, Birmingham, and Professor Harold Levenson of Vanderbilt Law School, along with Michael Astrue, General Counsel of Biogen, Inc. and Chair of our Health Law Committee, have assembled many of the leading experts in the Health Law field for a full day program focusing on Regulation of Health Care: Latest Developments. Add a visit to the Grand Ole Opry, other social events, and a full agenda for our Council meetings, and you surely have an exciting Midyear Meeting.

So, start thinking about making your Nashville reservations now! And, more importantly, start thinking about how you can maximize the benefits of Section membership by becoming involved in our activities. We pride ourselves on welcoming all who share our interest in Administrative Law and Regulatory Practice, or who just wish to meet, work, and socialize with lawyers from such diverse legal backgrounds as the legislative, executive and judicial branches of government, academia, private practice, in-house corporate practice, and pro bono organizations. If Nashville doesn't fit into your schedule, start thinking about our upcoming meetings in Scottsdale, Arizona (April 24-26) and Toronto, Canada (July 31-August 4). Don't miss these opportunities.
