Member News

Trevor Potter, formerly a member and Chair of the Federal Elections Commission, has joined the firm of Wiley, Rein & Fielding.

Susan Braden was elected to the Section Council in Baltimore to fill the unexpired term of Sylvia Alderman, who resigned from the Section and the ABA.

January saw three Section members appear before the Supreme Court. Dan Troy and Robinson Everett both argued voting rights cases, one from Texas and the other from North Carolina. Ted Olson, who but for the weather would have set (or tied) some record by arguing two cases before the Court within ten days, represented the state of Virginia in its quest to maintain the Virginia Military Institute's single-sex school. In February he argued his delayed case on behalf of LA police officer Stacey Koons involving the ability of courts to depart from the Federal sentencing guidelines.

Bill Jenson, Vice Chair of the Agriculture Committee, was appointed the Judicial Officer of the Department of Agriculture in January.

John Sharer has become a partner in Christian, Barton, Epps, Brent & Chappell in Richmond, Virginia, where he concentrates in public utility regulation and energy law.

Matthew Iwicki has joined the Roanoke, Virginia, firm of Gentry Locke Rakes & Moore as a senior associate specializing in environmental regulation and permitting.

The Transportation Committee under Chair Neil Eisner has instituted a Newsletter for its members. The first issue, in addition to announcing upcoming luncheons and summarizing remarks made at past ones, contained substantive articles summarizing recent legislation, including the ICC Termination Act, and recent FAA regulations.
