“I, for the life of me, cannot understand why the terrorists have not…attacked our food supply because it is so easy to do….” Tommy Thompson, Former Secretary, Department of Health and Human Services
Contaminated spinach. Tainted pet food. Although no evidence suggests that intentional acts caused these recent food recalls, the safety of the nation’s food supply remains a top homeland security concern. Since September 11, 2001 the government – together with industry and academia – has taken meaningful steps to protect the food supply from terrorism. The Public Health Security and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act of 2002, for example, requires registration of food facilities and gives record inspection authority to the Food and Drug Administration when investigating a possible food security incident. To obtain and properly disseminate homeland security information between the government and private sector stakeholders, the food and agricultural industry operates an Information Sharing and Analysis Center (ISAC).
This panel brings together government, industry, and academic experts to share their significant experience in homeland security and its unique application within the food and agriculture critical infrastructure. During this 90 minute lunchtime event, the panelists will describe current homeland security initiatives affecting the food and agriculture sectors, address ongoing security challenges, and provide considerations for improvement.
