8. STATE AND LOCAL BARS BENEFIT FROM BAR SERVICES DIVISION PROGRAMS

The ABA Bar Services Division provides critical support to more than 300 state and local bars.  Through the Field and Consulting Services Program, the Division makes contact with more than 1,400 state, local and diversity bar leaders and professional staff, including 240 young lawyer leaders.  These direct outreach efforts include on-site visits to bar association headquarters, participation in bar leader conferences and state bar regional meetings, and facilitation of strategic planning and board retreats and operational surveys.

The “main event” for the Division each year is the ABA Bar Leadership Institute in March, sponsored by the Standing Committee on Bar Activities and Services and the Division.  The BLI addresses the fundamentals of bar leadership including governance, finance and communications. Almost 300 bar leaders from national, state and local bar associations in 47 states attended the program in 2006.
