49. LEADERSHIP TRIP TO SOUTH AMERICA SPONSORED BY INTERNATIONAL LAW SECTION

International Law Section chair-elect Deborah Enix-Ross led a delegation of section leaders on a week-long trip to Argentina, Brazil and Chile to develop and enhance relationships with local bar association leaders, law firms, and government officials.Their trip included meetings with the U.S. Ambassador to Argentina, Lino Gutiérrez; the U.S. Consul General to São Paulo, Christopher McMullen; Americo Tadeau, the Senior Commercial Officer from the U.S. Embassy in Chile; and the then-Minister of Justice of Chile, Dr. Luis Bates Hidalgo.

The delegation also had the privilege of meeting with leaders of the private and public bar associations in each country (including Colegio de Abogados de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil- Seção de São Paulo, Centro de Estudos das Sociedades Advogados, Associação dos Advogados de São Paulo, and Colegio de Abogados de Chile); the managing partners of the leading law firms in each country; and Arbitration Center representatives in São Paulo and Santiago. In addition, the group met with Legal and Legislation Committees of American Chambers of Commerce in Santiago and São Paulo, as well as other international business organizations and leading academics. The delegation had substantive exchanges with each of these groups and heard significant interest from local lawyers and lawyers associations on increasing their participation in, and cooperation with, the Section.
