47. CLASS ACTION LITIGATION PROGRAM DRAWS NATIONAL ATTENTION

A “Who’s Who” of the class action world was in attendance at the Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section’s “The Future of Class Action Litigation in America” program, held in November 2005 in Washington D.C.  U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah was the keynote speaker in this conference, which drew defense, plaintiff and insurance lawyers from around the country.  Nationally recognized experts and practitioners addressed topics such as: “The Class Action Reform Act of 2005,” state v. federal jurisdiction, the use of arbitration in class action suits,  foreign plaintiffs in U.S. courts and vice versa, recent developments, settlements and fees, and adequate representation.

Dean Edward Sherman, Moise F. Steeg Jr. Professor of Negotiations at Tulane University Law School and chair of the ABA Task Force on Federal Class Action Legislation, and Professor Martin Redish, professor of law and public policy at Northwestern University School of Law, provided the program overviews.  Trends and hot topics in class action litigation were the focus of the conference.
