TIPS OFFERS FREE LEGAL ADVICE PROGRAM TO LOUISIANA CITIZENS AFFECTED BY HURRICANES KATRINA AND RITA
A free one-day program on insurance and eminent domain issues for hurricane victims was presented in May 2006 to citizens of Louisiana by the ABA Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section. The program, held in New Orleans, was geared to home owners, business owners, landlords, lawyers, renters, and anyone with insurance questions and issues stemming from the hurricanes.
This was an opportunity for Louisiana residents to receive free legal advice to assist them in starting over after the hurricanes. The program covered insurance issues for the property owner for both residential and commercial property owners; mediation and the insurance claims that are best suited for mediation with insurance companies; eminent domain; and suggestions on what to do next.
During lunch, attendees had an opportunity to talk to volunteer lawyers and ask questions. New Orleans’ Mayor Roy Nagin addressed the audience and gave insight on city plans for reconstruction.
The program was followed by a reception for all program attendees. At the reception, the ABA Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section (TIPS) awarded two scholarships to New Orleans law students who were displaced by the storm and have been active in efforts to rebuild the city.
