IMMIGRATION COMMISSION WORKS TO IMPROVE REPRESENTATION OF UNACCOMPANIED MINORS
The ABA Commission on Immigration received a grant through the Vera Institute of Justice for its project, ProBAR, to give legal rights presentations to unaccompanied immigrant children detained in South Texas. The funding is from the Office of Refugee Resettlement, and under the grant, ProBAR will also screen cases for asylum, special immigrant juvenile status, and other relief for placement with pro bono attorneys.
Children served by ProBAR include those from Central America, Latin America and Africa. Many are fleeing human rights abuses, human trafficking, and domestic violence. ProBAR is a national effort to provide pro bono legal services to asylum seekers detained in South Texas by the United States government. The project recruits, trains and coordinates the activities of volunteer attorneys, law students and legal assistants. ProBAR is a joint project of the ABA, the State Bar of Texas, and the American Immigration Lawyers Association. Information on volunteering for the project is available on the ProBAR Web site.
