24. ABA YLD ENABLES LAWYERS TO SERVE CLIENTS WITH HIV/AIDS ISSUES

People living with HIV/AIDS often face a unique array of legal challenges involving employment discrimination, bankruptcy, privacy and confidentiality, government benefits, and access to health care. Recognizing the critical role that lawyers play in encouraging HIV testing by preventing discrimination, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended that a referral to legal services should be among the very first things provided to individuals when learning that they are HIV-positive.

As part of its 2005–2006 Public Service Project, Answering the Call, the ABA Young Lawyers Division tackled these tough issues and more in a free four-part HIV Legal Checkup CLE program.  Produced by the ABA Center for CLE and Young Lawyers Division, in conjunction with the ABA AIDS Coordinating Committee (housed in the Section of Individual Rights and Responsibilities), this online program educates lawyers on the legal issues specific to clients who are living with HIV/AIDS.
