In December 2007, the IRS released the new Form 990, which will be required for tax years starting 2008. The IRS expects to release draft instructions to the Form 990 this spring, and finalized them this summer. The new Form 990 is not just a tax return that reports financial information. It is now a full-fledged information return that will affect not only reporting, but also governance and compliance. For example, the new Form 990 imposes significant additional reporting requirements on hospitals, including in the areas of community benefit, compensation, tax-exempt bonds, joint ventures, and governance.
As another example, new disclosures will now be required with for lobbying and political campaign activities and activities outside of the U.S. We are currently in the reporting period for the new Form 990. Now is the time to make changes to governance and operating practices, so that organizations can answer questions the right way on the new Form 990.
This downloadable audio program will provide an overview of new Form 990, with a particular emphasis on the new disclosure requirements, and will point out some of the practices and policies that organizations will need to implement to properly address the new Form 990.
