For the first time in its 125-year history, the American Bar Association, through the Criminal Justice Section, has published a work of fiction, The Shadow of Justice. The story provides a realistic view of the inner workings of the criminal justice system through the eyes of protagonist Circuit Court Judge Clark Addison - as seen by noted Miami criminal defense attorney Milton Hirsch.
Awakened one morning and informed that one of his oldest friends has shot and killed his family and himself, Judge Addison has little time to react. Soon after, he is on the bench, facing another of his oldest friends, Jack Sheridan, now a defense attorney trying a case in Addison's court. Over the course of the next week, Addison describes his trial and, in flashbacks, traces his intertwined relationships in a search for meaning, a search for truth, and a search for justice.
This novel is the first in a series, "Great Stories by Great Lawyers," to be published by the ABA. The series will feature new novels by the people who know best how the legal system really works: practicing lawyers and judges.

Miami is to criminal law what Oz was to Dorothy and Toto. From the glitter to the grit, nobody knows the place better than Milt Hirsch, and it all shines through in The Shadow of Justice. - Carl Hiaasen, author of Sick Puppy and Basket Case
Shadow of Justice is great stuff - a page-turner of a murder mystery, and a wickedly funny send-up of the justice system's failings. If you love a good trial, a good laugh, or just a plain good read, look no further than Hirsch's wonderful tale of Miami lawyers at their best (and worst). - Barry Scheck, Professor of Law, Cardozo Law School/Yeshiva University, and co-author of Actual Innocence: When Justice Goes Wrong and How to Make it Right
Hirsch's pen cuts like a knife into the sordid, seedy underbelly of the criminal justice system. What spills forth is a tantalizing tale of deception and lust. Shadow of Justice is told with gripping legal accuracy, as only a masterful trial lawyer can tell it. - Judge Marilyn Milian, Judge of The People's Court Television Show
A horrific crime without known motive, a cunning frame-up, and a judge caught between the law and the truth. Only an attorney of Milton Hirsch's caliber could pull this one off. Intelligent, incisive, and real. At last a novel where the moral issues of the legal profession come painfully alive. - Barbara Parker, author of Suspicion of Vengeance and other titles
