The Standing Committee on Publishing Oversight (SCOPO) is comprised of twelve
members:
Eight representatives from among those recommended to the ABA President
by the Section Officers Conference from the sections, divisions, and forums
having book and/or periodical publishing programs, and
Four at-large members.
Members serve three-year staggered terms and may be reappointed for a second
three-year term.
SCOPO was established by the House of Delegates at the 1996 Annual Meeting. The
objectives of SCOPO are to:
Study and recommend publishing policies and strategies to the Board of
Governors and House of Delegates;
Provide policy oversight, supervision, and direction to publishing at the
ABA (exclusive of the ABA Journal) to ensure a coordinated, businesslike
approach to the creation and distribution of its intellectual property; and
Work closely with the Director of ABA Publishing, who is responsible for
implementing the Association’s publication policies and for developing
publishing initiatives designed to meet the changing needs of members, to
produce revenues, or to support other Association goals.
